VPA CHEERLEADING COMMITTEE
Tuesday, April 10, 2007
VOA Office

Members Present: David Capman, Amy Molina, Robyn Myers, Lissa McDonald,
Melba Masse, Heath Haskell, Bob Johnson

Minutes:

- welcomed Heath Haskell, Vermont Cheerleading Coaches representative.

- motion by Amy M., second by Melba M., to approve minutes of 10/2/06. Note – Middlebury Extreme competition did not occur.

- review of 2005 – 2006 season.
- during the regular season, U-32 ran into an issue with the use of Megaphones. Cheerleading rules allow the use of megaphones, however Basketball rules do not. Recommend that Cheerleading Committee makes a request to Basketball Committee to allow megaphones when used appropriately (quote the Spirit Rule Book). Robyn will develop a list for appropriate use. Amy will present the request to the Basketball Committee this Fall.

- discussed possible conflict with 2 games per week (VPA rule). Cheerleading has been exempt from this rule due to the nature of the sport. Many schools have the squads cheer at both boys and girls home games and this can lead to more than 2 games per week.

- discussed request from Richford concerning a possible Cheerleading Jamboree. More information is needed on this request.

- brief discussion ob Cheerleading during Fall/Spring. VPA does not sanction these, but would expect schools to follow the general guidelines of Winter Cheerleading. Remove any reference in the Guide to Fall/Spring.

- Cheerleading did have an ejection this year (West Rutland). Regular procedures were followed and a two game ejection was implemented.

- discussed briefly the Milton HS issue (two teams, one school, one non-school). No action needed.

- review of Championship event.
- issue of people reserving whole bleachers has arisen. This should not be allowed. We will make individual schools aware of this.

- handicapped space issue. Seemed to be OK. Will need to make sure that there are enough spaces provided. - issue of sportsmanship discussed (t-shirts with champions that are worn immediately after the championship event. Tough issue to deal with. We discourage the action, but we do not believe we can stop it.

- financial report – Cheerleading is losing money due to high overhead expenses. This cannot continue. Motion by Melba M., second by David C., to implement a $125 entry fee for the 2007-2008 championship. Vote – Yes – 2, No – 1 Motion approved. Robyn will also contact Burns Page Concerning possible sponsorships for the event.

- discussion on adding MS/JV/Youth competition to the state championship. This was done before. Results in a long day. No action at this time.

- Coaches are recommending no “call backs”. Motion by Melba M., second by Amy M., that based on the coaches recommendation, there will be no “call backs” at the 2007-2008 championship. Approved unanimously.

- discussion on New England competition. Mixed reviews from schools entered. One issue to consider is developing a minimal score for a team to qualify for the New Englands. This will be discussed in the Fall meeting.

- brief discussion on Castleton event. Heath reported all went well. They hope to continue this next year.

- brief discussion on participation in more than 3 sanctioned events in a season. This is not a big issue. Events that are conducted after the season (Castleton) do not need to be counted towards the three.

- brief discussion on new ASC requirement concerning divisional alignments. Cheerleading Chair will meet with ASC over the next year to discuss “criteria” used for divisional alignments. All alignments will now come as recommendations from sport specific committee.

- 2008 Championship – Champlain Valley Exposition – Sat. Feb. 23, 2008 6:00 p.m.

- brief discussion on HS cheerleaders cheering at VT Voltage games. From the VPA this is fine as long as the HS coach is not involved (out of season coaching rules). No further action

- brief discussion on NFHS/ACEP. VT may be changing which course it uses. This will be decided later this Spring. No further action.

- adjourned
