VPA Office
Members
Present: Bill Lawson, Bob Davis, Pam Arnold, Kathi Bierwirth,
Chris Sousa, D.G. Weaver, Patrick Burke, Chris Hodsden, Dan Marlow,
Cynthia Hinrichsen, Bob Johnson
Also
Present: Justin Martin (VT Glades)
Minutes:
- motion by
Chris H., second by Cynthia H. to approve minutes of 1/10/07. Vote-
approved unanimously.
- brief discussion
on sportsmanship editorial in Burlington Free Press (North Country).
No action taken.
- discussion
with Justin Martin (VT Glades) concerning a proposal to allow high
school students to participate on non-school teams during a sports
season. Maine and New Hampshire currently allow this (Bob J. will
check on this). From the VPA perspective there are several issues.
1) day of rest, 2) playing two sports in the same season and 3)
number of games in a week. No action taken. Discussion to continue.
- update on
H29. No action taken so far. Bill L. did have a chance to speak
with Rep. Jewett (sponsor) about this issue. Good chance this bill
will not get out of committee this session. No further action.
- winter update
– all went well. Weather presented minimal issues. Financially it
like we did OK, but final results are not in yet. No major issues
or controversies.
- discussion
on recommendation from Transfer Without a Change of Residency Committee.
They recommend a 20 day wait period if a student transfer to Another
school after the sports season has begun. Also recommend that students
must be eligible to participate in 60% of the regular season games
in order for the student to be able to participate in the tournament.
Committee did not want to deal with the issue of discipline following
a student from one school to another. Bob J. will refer this
to Michael Marks for his opinion. No further action.
- lunch meeting
with the Executive Council. Discussion on how ASC considers appeals
(process). Further discussions will continue.
- discussion
on criteria ASC wants committees to use when they set the next divisional
alignments. Should look at a) individual school request, b) number
of total students in school, c) 12% factor, d) wins/losses over
4 years, e) number of students participating in a program and f)
safety factor. Committees are to make recommendations to ASC. Appeals
are then to come to ASC (ASC is to view the recommendations before
they are sent to schools). Bob J. will do a presentation at September
AD meeting. ASC will still meet with committee chairs over the next
year.
- reviewed proposed
hardship application and process. Bob J. will refer them to Michael
Marks for comment. Return to ASC in May for final approval (reword
Policy to focus on hardship).
